Tuesday Tips #17

Today’s Tuesday Tips is to always ensure you know Geography of the areas you ancestors lived. This context may explain many actions your ancestors took. For example, if you know where streets and churches are in relation to each other they places your ancestors baptisms, burials and marriages will make more sense.

When I was confused about why my Morley ancestors were so nonconformist, I didn’t realise that the people of Morley had to walk/travel to Batley Parish Church. This made people more likely to use the variety of nonconformist chapels as it cost less to get to.

Church or chapel was a big part of social support and life for many – many would have chosen where to live partly based on where the nearest appropriate chapel or church was,(as well as location of family members and employment).
